Safe Environment Program Instructions
The Diocese of Charlotte has launched a new training program for clergy, employees and volunteers to enhance efforts to protect children and young people in all of our churches, schools and ministries. This new program, called CMG Connect, replaces the VIRTUS Online training program.
This change affects ALL priests, deacons, men and women religious, seminarians, lay employees, and volunteers who work or serve in the Charlotte diocese.
CMG Connect streamlines the diocese’s extensive Safe Environment
program – combining background screening, onboarding and training on one
platform
for everyone who ministers, works or volunteers at the diocese’s 92
parishes and missions, 20 schools, and its ministries and programs. CMG
Connect is a service of Catholic Mutual Group, the leading provider of
insurance to more than 125 (arch)dioceses in North America.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer in the Diocese of Charlotte!
Whether as clergy, employees or volunteers in the Diocese of Charlotte, we all have a role in protecting children, young people and vulnerable adults. The diocese has adopted policies and procedures to safeguard those whose care has been entrusted to us.
To volunteer at any of our parishes, schools or ministries, you must pass an initial background check and the diocese’s Safe Environment training course. This online training is designed to teach people about recognizing the warning signs of abuse, how to help prevent abuse, and the appropriate ways to respond and report suspicious behavior.
Here’s what to do:
- Go to https://charlotte.cmgconnect.org and register for a new account.
- Follow the prompts to fill out your profile information.
Under “Site”: Select the primary parish/school/ministry location where you will be volunteering.
Under “USCCB role”: Select “Volunteer,” then check the appropriate participation category for the role selected. Most volunteers should select box “g: Volunteer that has contact with Children” unless instructed otherwise.
- Complete the “Safe Haven: It’s Up to You” training curriculum.
- Read and acknowledge the diocese’s Safe Environment policies.
- Complete the background check request form.
That’s it! Connect with your local Safe Environment coordinator to begin your volunteer service.
You truly are “the hands and feet of Jesus” to people in need in our diocese. Thank you!
