The Feast of the Assumption on Aug. 15 commemorates the Catholic Church’s teaching that recognizes the Blessed Virgin Mary’s singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection by which she was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, when the course of her earthly life was finished. The day is usually a holy day of obligation for Catholics, but for the United States, the obligation to attend Mass is lifted in 2026 because the feast day falls on a Saturday.
