Easter Vigil

On this holy night – “the mother of all vigils” – the Church keeps watch, celebrating the Resurrection of Christ in the sacraments and awaiting His return in glory. It is the turning point of the Triduum, the Passover of the new covenant, which marks Christ’s passage from death to life.

The Easter Vigil begins with the Easter fire and the lighting of the paschal candle, the reading of salvation history, the celebration of the sacraments of initiation for people becoming members of the Catholic Church, and the renewal of baptismal promises for Catholics.

The mystery, beauty and ancient rituals of the Easter Vigil touch the deepest part of people’s souls with elements of darkness, light, silence, music, fire, water and oil, along with bread and wine that become the Body and Blood of the risen Lord. We are reminded that new life in Christ can never be overcome by darkness or death.
