He expressed solidarity with immigrants and challenged people to think about their perspective on immigration in light of Church teaching.
Bishop Martin’s message to the people of the Diocese of Charlotte:
My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I write to you at this unique moment in the life of our diocese when so many in our community find themselves in fear. Thankfully, I have spent these days with my brother bishops of the United States gathered for our annual meeting, where there has been much attention brought to the challenges that confront not just our immigrant brothers and sisters, but all of us. We all are compelled to decide how we want to bring the Good News of Jesus to our world.
I am proud to lend my strong support to the 2025 U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Special Pastoral Message on Immigration. I will simply add the following for you to consider:
- As you engage in private prayer and reflection, as well as public comment on this topic, ask yourself if your political views are forming your religious beliefs or if your religious beliefs are forming your political views. Jesus calls us to the latter. St. Paul boldly speaks to us in this moment when he says, “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Rom 12:2). Is your mind being renewed by the Gospel, or by cable news and social media? Truth is not first created in civil law; rather, the Truth is made flesh in Jesus Christ and entrusted to all of us to proclaim “the true light, which enlightens everyone” (John 1:9). Let us not try to proclaim Truth without first being in deep relationship with Jesus Christ.
- To those immigrants regardless of your status here in western North Carolina, know that the Roman Catholic Church values who you are as children of God and stands with you. Do not be paralyzed by fear, especially as you celebrate your faith in our churches. Trust that God walks with you, as do we during this time of uncertainty.

Mis hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:
Les escribo en este momento tan particular en la vida de nuestra diócesis, cuando tantos en nuestra comunidad se encuentran con temor. Agradezco haber pasado estos días reunido con mis hermanos obispos de los Estados Unidos en nuestra asamblea anual, donde se ha prestado mucha atención a los desafíos que enfrentan no solo nuestros hermanos y hermanas inmigrantes, sino todos nosotros. Todos estamos llamados a decidir cómo queremos llevar la Buena Noticia de Jesús a nuestro mundo.
Me enorgullece ofrecer mi firme apoyo al MENSAJE PASTORAL ESPECIAL SOBRE LA INMIGRACIÓN de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos para 2025. Permítanme añadir lo siguiente para su reflexión:
- Al dedicar tiempo a la oración privada y a la reflexión, así como a sus comentarios públicos sobre este tema, pregúntense si sus opiniones políticas están formando sus creencias religiosas o si sus creencias religiosas están formando sus opiniones políticas. Jesús nos llama a lo segundo. San Pablo nos habla con valentía en este momento cuando dice: “No se amolden a este mundo, sino transfórmense mediante la renovación de su mente” (Rom 12,2). ¿Está su mente siendo renovada por el Evangelio, o por los noticieros y las redes sociales? La verdad no nace primero en la ley civil; más bien, la Verdad se hace carne en Jesucristo y se nos confía a todos para proclamar “la luz verdadera, que ilumina a todo hombre” (Jn 1,9). No intentemos proclamar la Verdad sin antes estar en una relación profunda con Jesucristo.
- A ustedes, inmigrantes, sin importar su situación migratoria aquí en el oeste de Carolina del Norte, sepan que la Iglesia Católica valora quiénes son ustedes como hijos de Dios y está a su lado. No se dejen paralizar por el miedo, especialmente al practicar su fe en nuestras iglesias. Confíen en que Dios camina con ustedes, y que nosotros también lo hacemos en este tiempo de incertidumbre.
