Who We Are

Deacons are ordained through the sacrament of holy orders, as are bishops and priests. These men play a very special role and are as different as the communities they serve. The word “deacon” comes from the Greek “diakonos,” meaning “servant.” Holy orders configures the deacon to Christ, who made Himself the “deacon” or servant of all.

Deacons are usually assigned to a parish and often serve in ministries outside their parish. They are called to identify the diverse needs within the parish and local community and find ways to meet them. All duties a deacon performs come from a place of sacramental identity.

With the wide range of ethnicities, cultures and life situations represented in the Diocese of Charlotte, deacons are called to be aware of the needs of these communities and serve them in appropriate ways.

Deacons are usually married, most have children and they typically work in professions outside the Church.
