Diocesan Academic Events

Diocesan Wide Spelling Bee

Each year students in grades 4th-8th compete at the school level for the opportunity to represent their school at the Diocesan-wide Spelling Bee held in January at the Mecklenburg Area Catholic School Fine Arts Center on the campus of Charlotte Catholic High School.

St Jerome Book Battle

The St. Jerome Book Battle was created by the Catholic Schools Office of the Diocese of Charlotte to encourage students to read books that promote the true, the good, and the beautiful and foster growth in virtue.

Each school year, a list of 15 books is provided for 4th/5th grade students and to 6th-8th grade students. Under the guidance of their coaches, participating students read the selected books and may engage in a variety of activities to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the books.

Each participating school sends one team of 12 students to compete in the St. Jerome Book Battle competition for their grade level (4th/5th grade or 6th-8th grade). Teams are asked questions about the selected books for their age group and are awarded points for their answers. Teams compete against one team at a time in various preliminary rounds.  The highest scoring team wins for the 4th/5th grade competition. In the 6th-8th grade competition, the two highest scoring teams from the preliminary rounds will compete against each other in a championship round. The highest scoring team from the championship round wins the 6th-8th grade competition.

The diocesan competitions will take place at the MACS Fine Arts Center at Charlotte Catholic High School.
