The Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte received its 4th bishop on October 24, 2003 when the Most Rev. Peter Jugis was ordained to the episcopate at St. Matthew Church in Charlotte. Bishop Jugis was baptized at St. Ann Church in Charlotte by Msgr. Michael Begley, who would later become the first Bishop of Charlotte. He was ordained to the priesthood in St. Peter’s Basilica by Blessed Pope John Paul II in 1983 and he was awarded a doctorate in Canon Law in 1993. His Excellency not only served as a priest in the Diocese of Charlotte but also as the judicial vicar.
