On December 14, 1968 an additional relic was deposited in the new altar at St. Lawrence, Asheville during the altar’s consecration. The parish obtained a relic of it’s patron saint, the martyr St. Lawrence, to place beside the other altar relics of Sts. Felicitas and Zeno. St. Lawrence, an Archdeacon in Rome, was burned to death on a gridiron in 258 AD. St. Lawrence Church in Asheville was designated a Minor Basilica by Blessed Pope John Paul II in 1993.
