On 25 May 2003 His Excellency George E. Lynch, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Raleigh, fell asleep in the Lord. Bishop Lynch was consecrated bishop on 6 January 1970 and served as Auxiliary Bishop of Raleigh until his retirement in 1985. As a priest in the Diocese of Raleigh he served parishes that would one day be in the Diocese of Charlotte including St. Lawrence in Asheville. While he was serving there he assisted in the establishment of St. Barnabas in Arden. Bishop Lynch was a heroic pro-life activist who suffered beatings and imprisonment while protesting on behalf of the unborn.
