The episcopal consecration of Bishop Vincent Waters occured on 15 May 1945. He succeeded Bishop Eugene McGuinness as the third Ordinary of the Raleigh Diocese and would remain Bishop of Raleigh until his death in 1974. During his episcopacy Bishop Waters witnessed the establishment of many churches and schools as well as the Diocese of Charlotte which was formed out of the western half of the Diocese of Raleigh. Bishop Waters is especially remembered for his 1953 decision to cease segregation in diocesan schools and parishes.
