On 24 June 1925, Bishop William J. Hafey was ordained Bishop and became the first Ordinary of the newly established Diocese of Raleigh. At the time, the new diocese covered all of North Carolina except for 8 western counties belonging to the Abbatia Nullius of Belmont Abbey. Hafey remained Bishop of Raleigh until 1937 when he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Scranton. He became Ordinary of that diocese in 1938 and remained in that appointment until his death in 1954.
