Fr. Thomas Frederick Price, the first native North Carolinian to be ordained a priest, was born on August 19, 1860 in Wilmington, NC. As a young priest he served in Asheville and even offered Mass at the top of Mount Mitchell for the conversion of North Carolina. Later he and Bishop James Walsh founded the Maryknoll Religious Congregation (The Catholic Foreign Missionary Society of America). Fr. Price is unique in that he wrote a daily letter to the Blessed Virgin Mary and is remembered for his intense devotion to St. Bernadette. His cause for canonization is currently open and under the care of the Diocese of Raleigh.
