ABBOT HAID CONSECRATED BISHOP

abbtbpleohaid_websmallOn 1 July 1888, Abbot Leo Haid of Belmont Abbey was consecrated bishop by James Cardinal Gibbons of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. It was fitting that Gibbons, the first Vicar Apostolic of North Carolina, be the one to ordain the last Vicar Apostolic of the state. On this day Haid, who became the first abbot of Belmont Abbey in 1885, also became the first abbot-bishop in the United States.
