National / Local Pilgrimages
U.S. PILGRIMAGE SITES
Pilgrims can make a pious visit to other sacred places around the world, including any minor basilica, Marian sanctuary, or national sanctuary.
Washington, D.C.: Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Michigan Ave. N.E., Washington, DC 20017
National shrines: Shrines in Orlando, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia are also Jubilee Year pilgrimage sites. For a full list and other details about visiting them this holy year, go to https://www.catholicshrines.org/jubileeofhope.
LOCAL PILGRIMAGE SITES
You don’t have to travel far to make a meaningful pilgrimage. In fact, three Jubilee Year pilgrimage sites are located here in the Diocese of Charlotte:
- Basilica of St. Lawrence, 97 Haywood St., Asheville, NC 28801
- Basilica of Mary, Help of Christians, on the campus of Belmont Abbey College, 100 Belmont-Mt. Holly Road, Belmont, NC 28012
- Cathedral of St. Patrick, 1621 Dilworth Road East, Charlotte, NC 28203
While they do not have Holy Doors (those are exclusively in Rome), all of these three historic and sacred places welcome you to visit, pray and worship. Come for Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, the Liturgy of the Hours (such as Evening Prayer), the Stations of the Cross or recitation of the Rosary, recitation of the Akathist hymn, or a penance service. View each church’s website for Mass and confession times, and other info.

What if I can’t go on a pilgrimage?
If you are truly repentant of sin but cannot participate in the various Jubilee Year celebrations or pilgrimages for serious reasons (especially cloistered nuns and monks, but also the elderly, the sick, prisoners, and those who, through their work in hospitals or other care facilities, provide continuous service to the sick), you can obtain the Jubilee Indulgence, if, united in spirit with those taking part in person, you pray the Our Father, the Profession of Faith in any approved form, and other prayers in conformity with the objectives of the Holy Year, offering up your sufferings or hardships.
